据杨莉介绍，病人至少需要三个人献血的血量，其他两位献血者也来自中国。对于自己的举动，杨莉称“几年前我生女儿时，才知道自己是‘熊猫血’，需要备足血液，医院才敢剖腹产。当时也有好心人来给我捐血，连名字都没有留下。这次能有机会去帮助别人，也算是爱心的传递。”
9月20日，一名四川游客在普吉岛受伤骨折，急需手术。由于这名游客是罕见的“熊猫血”（Rh阴性血），当地无法找到匹配的血型，手术搁置。9月22日，南京一名女导游得知这一消息后，第二天就坐飞机赶去普吉岛，给受伤游客献了450毫升血。现代快报记者 徐红艳
这名女导游叫杨莉，9月22日，她在普吉岛机场准备带团回国时，得知一四川女游客不慎受伤，急需与自己血型一致的Rh阴性AB型血做手术。由于要将团队送回国，杨莉只能先回南京。“本来打算回国后抽血，再由专人送过去，但听说申办检疫手续需要一定的时间，病人等不及。”
