8月8日，肯尼亚举行总统选举，现任总统肯雅塔以约54.27%的得票率赢得连任，但反对派领导人奥廷加拒绝接受，并向肯最高法院提起上诉。9月1日，肯最高法院裁定总统选举结果无效，并要求于60天内重新举行总统选举。
这是9月3日，在肯尼亚首都内罗毕，反对派“国家超级联盟”的支持者在集会上欢呼。
