与此同时，澳大利亚板球队作弊的丑闻迅速传遍世界，英国广播公司、美国有线电视新闻网等国际主流媒体都进行了连续跟踪报道，甚至将其作为头条滚动播出。

实际上，为了赢得比赛而不择手段在有澳大利亚人参加的国际赛事中屡见不鲜，澳大利亚队员常常因为不尊重对方被指责“缺乏风度和体育精神”。在2016年里约奥运会上，澳大利亚游泳选手霍顿赛前突然无端指责中国运动员孙杨是“嗑药骗子”就是典型的例证。赛后，霍顿承认这是种心理战术，他是为了给自己增加胜算而故意用语言激怒孙杨，该事件引发中国媒体和民众的强烈不满。据悉，经常与澳大利亚进行各种体育比赛的新西兰人对澳大利亚的体育文化也颇有微词。

《悉尼先驱晨报》在报道中认为，此次澳大利亚板球队公然作弊把“为了赢而不计代价”的丑陋文化推向了一个新高度。尊重规则、尊重对手是最起码的体育精神，否则赢得了比赛却失去了声誉，得不偿失。
