庄德水表示，终身监禁的运用，弥补了直接适用死刑过重而无期徒刑过轻的问题，在常态慎用死刑的当下，是对巨贪判刑的一个重要选择，也将成为司法机关加大腐败惩治力度的一个趋势。

至于今年另外一个被判死缓的“大老虎”——朱明国，11月11日，其以受贿罪被判处死刑，缓期二年执行；以巨额财产来源不明罪获刑八年，决定执行死刑，缓期二年执行。他直接或通过妻子受贿共计1.4亿元，另有9104万元不明来源。

除此之外，今年以来共有6人被判处无期徒刑，分别是令计划、郭伯雄、万庆良、申维辰、谭力、金道铭。由此，十八大以来被判处无期徒刑的大老虎总数达到9人，其它3人为内蒙古自治区党委原常委、统战部原部长王素毅（2014年宣判），国家发展和改革委员会原副主任、国家能源局原局长刘铁男（2014年宣判），中共中央政治局原常委周永康（2015年宣判）。
