美国借“航行自由”的幌子，在南海地区制造意图不明的巡航，并和一些国家举行大规模军演加剧地区紧张局势。岛上一位军人说，西沙的平静就是被逐日增多的外舰所打破。据经常担负战备值班任务的金磊介绍，战备值班时非常紧张，常会有突发情况发生。但与几年前相比，现在金磊自信多了，除个人经验的积累，在这份自信背后更多的是不断强大的国力和军力。金磊告诉《环球时报》记者：“现在越来越有信心。装备由快艇换成了新型导弹快艇、新型护卫舰。除水上舰艇的装备，空中力量的部署也相应增强了。信息化设施的投入使用，信息化水平提高，越来越有底气。”
