经铁路警方调查，这次逼停事件的“罪魁祸首”，竟是四名小学生，他们都在7-9岁之间。1月2日上午，他们放假在家闷得慌，便聚集一起来到铁路边玩耍，从一处排水涵处钻入铁路防护网。出于好奇，想看看碎石被火车碾压后的样子，他们便在铁轨上摆放碎石。见到动车停车，有工作人员下车查看，他们便一溜烟儿跑掉，后被铁路民警查获。
就为了看看碎石被火车碾压后的样子，4名小学生竟通过铁路防护网排水沟钻入铁道线，将碎石放置在铁轨上，导致两列动车被迫紧急停车。其中一列动车车窗玻璃被弹起的碎石击中出现裂纹。
铁路部门介绍，1月2日上午11时43分，武昌开往襄阳的D5243次列车行驶在襄阳东站与襄阳站之间时，碾压上被放置在铁轨上的碎石。司机紧急停车后检查发现，铁轨上、动车组列车车轮上均有碾压碎石的痕迹，且15号车厢右侧一块车窗外层玻璃破裂；紧接着，襄阳开往黄冈东的D5238次列车运行到此处时，再次碾压上碎石，被迫紧急停车，两列动车分别延误18分钟、26分钟。
