根据澳大利亚国家统计局数据显示，2015年澳洲活牛出口量超过133万头，而越南是澳活牛出口的主要市场之一。2015年越南采购澳大利亚活牛35万头，相比2014年上涨近50%。此次活牛虐待事件将对澳大利亚的活牛出口行业产生不利影响。
据英国每日邮报，近日，一段活牛遭受越南屠宰场员工虐待视的频引起了网络热议。画面中，一头出口自澳大利亚的活牛遭到屠宰场员工的反复殴打，倒在地上后又被重锤了四下方才死去。而后续视频显示，现场目睹同伴惨状的另一头牛则被吓得瘫倒在地上。视频发布后，澳大利亚暂停了与越南三家屠宰场的活牛出口贸易。
这段视频由澳大利亚动物保护机构秘密拍摄。视频被传上网络后，引起了活牛出口国澳大利亚的强烈反对。澳大利亚农业部长Barnaby Joyce在接受采访时表示这个视频令人恐慌，“所有看到这个视频的人都会被这种虐待行为震惊，我们会非常认真对待这些报告”。
