很多抗议者打着“打倒沙特王室”，“人民希望政权倒台”等类似2011年阿拉伯之春抗议示威时的标语。沙特阿拉伯2015年共执行150人死刑，是20年来最高的一年。
据英国广播公司BBC报道，1月2日沙特阿拉伯举行自1979年来最大规模的集体处决，47名囚犯因触犯恐怖主义罪名被处决，其中包括什叶派教士Nimr al-Nimr，他是2011年沙特爆发“阿拉伯之春”示威活动的核心人物。
据报道，此事引发中东各地民众大规模游行示威。抗议浪潮最高的是沙特在中东地区的长期抗争对手——由什叶派主导的伊朗。此外，在沙特境内什叶派穆斯林聚居地东部省份，以及邻国巴林等地也均有规模不同的抗议示威活动。
