据日本《读卖新闻》10月18日报道，日本首相安倍晋三18日搭乘部署在美海军横须贺基地的“罗纳德·里根”号核动力航母。据日本政府相关人士透露，这是日本在任首相首次搭乘美国航母。此举是为了鉴于安保相关法成立彰显牢固的美日同盟。
安倍当天出席了在神奈川县近海相模湾举行的海上自卫队观舰式，随后乘坐海上自卫队直升机转移。关于部署在当地的“里根”号，安倍在观舰式上训示道：“这是在‘3·11’日本大地震时赶往灾区的‘朋友’，由衷欢迎。”
考虑到安保法成立，安倍还在训示中强调：“决心高举积极和平主义的旗帜，为世界和平与繁荣作出比此前更多的贡献。”他还向自卫队提出要求，称“为了给孩子们创造一个没有战争的和平日本，希望诸位进一步执行有关任务”。
在观舰式上，隶属美军普天间飞机场的新型运输机MV-22“鱼鹰”也进行了飞行。自卫队36艘舰艇和37架飞机参加了观舰式。除了美国和澳大利亚的海军外，韩国、印度和法国的海军舰船也首次接受了检阅。
