根据葡萄牙公共电视台的消息，当地时间8月15日中午，在葡萄牙马德拉岛(MADEIRA)因一颗巨型大树砸向人群，导致至少11人死亡，35人受伤，其中4人伤势严重。事件发生时，人们正在举行当地的宗教活动。事件发生后，当地的救护车和消防员赶到现场参与救援。根据现场目击者消息，砸中人群的树木是一颗老树，两年前就已经需要靠钢丝绳捆绑支撑。8月15日是当地重要的宗教节日，每年这一天都会赶来很多人来参加节日聚会。
